| Diamond forms at high pressure 50 miles or more underground and is the hardest mineral on earth. It is the pure colourless variety that remains the most popular but diamonds come in many colours; red, blue, green, yellow and black. The exceptional lustre and 'fire' of diamonds means they remain the most valued of all gemstones. |

Emerald is the green coloured variety of the mineral beryl, others in the family include aquamarine and morganite. The colour is due to a presence of chromium and vanadium. Exceptionally high grade emeralds are even more highly valued than diamonds. Emeralds are rarely flawless, in fact flaws help to identify natural stones from synthetics. |

Pearls are the creations of shellfish such as oysters and mussels. The inside of the shell is smooth and frictionless (mother of pearl), if grit or sand accidentally enters the shell the creature wraps the 'irritant' in layers of aragonite forming the pearl bead. Cultured pearls are now commonly 'grown'. Colours include white, pink and black. |

| Ruby is the red coloured variety of the mineral called corundum. All other coloured corundum is called sapphire. Rubies are rare, extremely hard wearing and beautiful. Their value reflects this. Star rubies are those in which a six rayed star can be seen 'floating' on the surface of the stone. This is caused by rutile inclusions. |

Sapphire is the name given to gem quality corundum that is not red (ruby). Sapphire is usually associated with the blue coloured stone, but it comes in many colours; pink, green, yellow and colourless. Top quality blues are still the most valuable though. Throughout the ages blue sapphires have been seen as 'heavenly', the colour of the sky. |
